Most young professionals in South Africa lose R30,000 - R80,000 per year simply because they accept the first offer. When HR says "We don't have budget," here's how to respond without losing the offer.

Never negotiate the number, negotiate the package. If they can't move on salary, they can often move on other things that are worth real money.

Use this script:
"I really appreciate the offer and I'm excited about the role. I understand the budget is fixed at R. Is there flexibility around [pick 2]: a 3-month performance review with salary adjustment, a work-from-home stipend, data allowance, professional course budget, or an early start date for leave days?"[X]
Why this works:
1. You show you listened. 2. You didn't say "no". 3. You gave them options. Managers can often approve training, remote work, or a 90-day review when they can't approve a higher salary immediately.
If you are already employed and want a raise: Don't say "I need more money because everything is expensive." Say "In the last 6 months I [Result 1], [Result 2], and [Result 3]. Based on market rates for this role in Gauteng, which is R - R, I'd like to discuss adjusting my package to R."[X][Y][Z]

Always bring data from Payscale, LinkedIn Salary, or Pnet. Emotion doesn't get raises. Evidence does.
