If you're managing anyone born after 1997, you've felt it. The rules have changed.

Gen Z is not lazy. They are just allergic to outdated leadership.

What Doesn't Work Anymore:
• "Because I said so" leadership • Annual reviews with no feedback in between • Valuing presence over performance
What Works:

1. Coach, Don't Command: Gen Z grew up with YouTube tutorials, not manuals. They want guidance: "Here's how I'd approach it, try it, let's review in an hour." Not micromanagement.

2. Feedback at Speed: Waiting 12 months for feedback is like waiting 12 months for a Wi-Fi password. They want short, frequent check-ins. 15 minutes weekly beats 2 hours yearly.

3. Purpose and Paycheque: Yes, they care about salary — the cost of living is high. But they also need to know WHY their work matters. Connect their task to the customer impact.

4. Mental Health Is Non-Negotiable: They will take a mental health day and talk about it. Smart companies are turning this into a strength by normalizing wellness, not penalizing it.

For managers over 35: This isn't about being soft. It's about being effective. The companies winning top young talent in SA right now are the ones who adapted first.
